The Monferrato
A ‘sea of hills’, decorated with vineyards, rice paddies, charming villages, each with a parish church, wine cellars and ‘infernot’ (characteristic cellars carved from the local tuff stone), and the river Po. The Monferrato is a place with a rich historical, architectural and artistic heritage, from the craftmanship of the goldsmith, to the local traditional products, festivals and food and wine.
It is an extraordinary territory which stretches from Valcerrina, with its enchanting green hills and valleys, truffle festivals, the Sacred Mount Park with the splendid Crea Sanctuary and votive chapel; to Valenza, the world capital of goldsmiths and headquarters of the Park of the Po, an uncontaminated natural area.
Over the centuries, the Monferrato has been a land with a great tradition of winemaking. The socio-economic events in its history, led to the depopulation and impoverishment of its rural heritage in the second half of the 20th century. However, in the last 20 years, there has been a huge turnaround and the Monferrato has started to revive and bloom again, just like a large vineyard. The entrepreneurial skills and the unfailing dedication of the local winemakers have created optimal conditions for high quality production of Monferrato wines which have had enormous success, even in the markets beyond Europe. From the great indigenous vines, Barbera, Grignolino, Freisa and Malvasia, to important wines such as Chardonnay. The Monferrato vintners offer a wide range of wines for even the most discerning palate.
